Tell us about yourself
Hello, my name is Mary Morgan. I am the Democratic Candidate for Illinois State Representative in House District 52. I have lived in Illinois all my life. My husband and I moved into District 52 over 20 years ago, to raise our amazing 2 kids. I’m a Baseball Mom and Girl Scout Mom. I’m a volunteer with PADS and my local church. I worked in the telecommunications industry for 25 years and went to work in my local school district Curriculum Office after being unemployed for over a year due to Covid. I am passionate about everyone being treated with dignity and respect, fact-based education, and a woman’s right to choose.
What are the priorities that you intend to focus on in office?
I want to focus on ensuring we have fair elections, or all of our rights can be taken away by a loud, extreme minority. Women’s reproductive rights must be maintained to ensure our human rights. And, we need common sense gun safety laws.
What led you into politics and to run for office?
I began running yard signs and writing postcards in 2014. That’s when I started to get involved in my local Democratic organizations. I was hired by the Curriculum Office summer of 2021. When school started, I watched people attacking the School Board for trying to keep the students and staff safe from Covid. My County party asked me to run because the Incumbent Rep would be unopposed. He definitely does not represent me or share my values.
Anti-LGBTQ legislation has become an agenda in states across the nation. What policies do you think are necessary to help ensure individuals are able to live full, safe, and happy lives?
We need to allow families and doctors to provide whatever services and support an LGBTQ+ person might want or need, at whatever age the need is identified. We cannot allow any policies that infringe on anyone’s right to live a full, safe and happy life.
The crisis of domestic violence is closely linked to the widespread and growing use of guns by abusers. What solutions do you advocate to reduce gender-based gun violence in Illinois?
I support removing guns from anyone involved in domestic abuse calls. Understanding a victim might not be able to press charges, anyone deemed a threat needs to have guns removed. I support red-flag laws. I support waiting periods before obtaining guns. I support an increase in the minimum age to purchase guns.
Should we enshrine the right to an abortion in our state constitution as other states have done?
Yes
Closing comments
I want to be a true representative of our community. I support the right to choose, gun safety, public education, and helping others. I want to advocate for the services we need while bringing more tax revenue back to Northern Illinois.
